DBNPA is the common name for 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide. It is a fast-acting, broad spectrum biocide for industrial use. DBNPA is a white to yellow powder with a mild, medicinal antiseptic odor. DBNPA is formulated into liquid concentrates, powders, and timerelease tablets depending on intended use. In water, DBNPA’s antimicrobial activity is nearly instantaneous, followed by rapid decomposition to carbon dioxide, ammonia, and bromide ion. DBNPA is effective against coliform bacteria; slime-forming and odor-causing algae; general bacteria and fungi (mold, mildew, and yeasts); and sulfide-producing bacteria.
